Is this a planned purchase?
9 October 2024
As producers, we have a responsibility to create garments that are made to last, instead of driving short-lived trends and overconsumption.
Based on the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s “Max 5” challenge, we present Woolpower’s perspective on overproduction, product lifespan, and responsibility within the clothing industry.
In 2024, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation launched the “Max 5” initiative, encouraging consumers to reduce their purchase of new clothing in order to meet climate targets. A simple checklist helps consumers make more thoughtful choices, highlighting quality and longevity.
Is this a planned purchase?
According to the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation, young people are exposed to up to 4,000 (!) purchase triggers every day. As manufacturers, we need to take responsibility for the resources we use, how much we produce, and why we produce it. That is why we have created this checklist for manufacturing companies:
Trust your product. Only produce garments that you know your customers will want to keep using year after year. Garments they have time to use and love.
Be unfashionable. Create garments you are proud of and that have a timeless appearance. You will achieve a more stable production, and your garments will work just as well season after season.
Work smarter. By not releasing new products every season, you can let your product development focus on improving quality and finding more sustainable solutions for resource consumption within production. Trust us, we have been doing it for a long time.
Goodbye to the sale frenzy. With a static product range, your retailers can avoid sales campaigns and continue selling the same garments next season, making the business more profitable and sustainable for everyone involved.
Become best friends with your suppliers. By maintaining a stable assortment, you can plan purchases more efficiently, place larger orders, and provide your suppliers with a safer and more sustainable production process.
If you missed the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s debate article, report, and the “Max 5” challenge, here’s a brief background: The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has recently published a debate article on overproduction in the clothing industry and overconsumption among Swedes. It introduces the “Max 5” challenge, which encourages consumers to purchase no more than five newly produced garments per year in order to meet climate targets. A simple checklist helps consumers make more thoughtful choices, highlighting quality and longevity – something that is especially close to our hearts. In a series of posts, we will share Woolpower’s perspective based on their checklist.
