Wool in Summer – Cooler Than You Think

Wool is often associated with cold winter days. But wool is also one of nature’s most functional materials when the temperature rises. By moving moisture away from the skin and helping regulate body temperature, wool garments can feel dry and comfortable both during activity and when you stop for a break.

Why Wool Works in Warm Weather

Wool has several properties that make it useful all year round. When temperatures rise, the fibre helps the body manage both heat and moisture.

Temperature Regulation

The natural crimp of the wool fibre helps trap air. In cold weather this helps retain warmth, but it also creates insulation against heat from the outside. This helps maintain a stable and comfortable temperature close to the body.

Moisture Management

When you are active, the body produces moisture. Wool is particularly effective at handling this.

Wool fibres can absorb up to about 30 percent of their own weight in moisture without feeling wet. At the same time the moisture is transported away from the skin and through the fabric, helping the garment feel drier and more comfortable.

Comfortable During Breaks

During activity the body produces heat, but when you stop the temperature can drop quickly.

Wool helps maintain a balanced temperature even during pauses. Because the material manages both heat and moisture, it often feels comfortable both during movement and when you stop.

Less Odour

Wool naturally resists odour. The fibre contains keratin, which helps prevent the growth of odour-causing bacteria.

This means garments can often be worn several times before needing to be washed. In many cases it is enough to simply air them between uses.

How Construction Affects Warmth

Not all wool garments feel equally warm. The way a material is knitted affects how heat is retained or released.

Ullfrotté Original –More Insulating

Ullfrotté Original is Woolpower’s classic material. It is terry knitted and has small loops on the inside of the garment. This construction allows the material to trap a large amount of air, which provides effective insulation. At the same time the wool helps move moisture away from the body and contributes to a comfortable temperature during activity in colder conditions.

LITE – Thinner and Cooler

Woolpower LITE is a thinner rib knitted material that sits closer to the body. The increased contact with the skin allows heat to move away from the body more efficiently. This makes the garment feel cooler when temperatures are higher. At the same time the wool retains its natural properties and helps manage moisture while regulating temperature.
