Why does Woolpower use synthetic fibers in our garments?

Woolpower garments contain a small amount of fossil-based synthetic fiber. The main reason we blend a small percentage of synthetic with wool is to maintain a good fit and, above all, to increase durability. Our garments are often used intensively, sometimes daily throughout an entire winter season, and need to last over time.

For many years, we have evaluated different fibers, yarn blends and material combinations to see if it is possible to replace fossil-based synthetic fibers. So far, we have not found an alternative that meets our requirements for functionality, durability and longevity.

A key question in this work has been: which material choice is most sustainable in the long term?

Since wool is a resource-intensive raw material, it is crucial that each garment has a long lifespan. The synthetic fiber helps hold the material together and enables the garments to withstand long-term wear, reducing the need for replacement with new products, which are also resource-intensive.

The most sustainable garment is the one you use year after year. For this reason, our goal is to find a more environmentally friendly alternative to virgin fossil-based synthetic fibers, without compromising the lifespan or performance of our garments.

In 2025, we began a collaboration with Around Systems to support our journey in identifying and evaluating alternative materials, optimizing our products for recycling and circular flows in a sustainable and long-term way, and reducing our environmental impact.
