Do you really need that sweater?

Based on the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s “Max 5” challenge, we present Woolpower’s perspective on overproduction, product lifespan, and responsibility within the clothing industry.
In 2024, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation launched the “Max 5” initiative, encouraging consumers to reduce their purchase of new clothing in order to meet climate targets. A simple checklist helps consumers make more thoughtful choices, highlighting quality and longevity.
Do you really need that sweater?
The most sustainable garments are the ones you already have in your wardrobe. By taking care of them, you can extend their lifespan. A favorite sweater with a broken zipper or a hole can be repaired, and garments that no longer fit can be sold and used by someone else.
So the question we want to ask is: How can you take care of what you already own?
Here are a few tips to help your Woolpower garments last even longer.
Wash less often. Wool garments do not need to be washed as frequently as garments made from other materials. The clever wool fiber naturally resists odors and dirt particles, which stay on the surface of the fiber and can often simply be aired away, preferably in humid weather. Learn more about washing wool garments.
Follow the care instructions and use the right detergent. When washing is needed, use a wool detergent designed for delicate fabrics and wool. Regular detergents break down the enzymes in the wool fibers.
Store your garments properly. Avoid storing garments in dark, enclosed spaces, as the proteins in wool fibers can become a feast for carpet beetles and other pests. Here you can find more tips on how to care for your wool garments.
Don’t worry about pilling. We know our garments pill quickly. Even though it may not look perfect, the pilling is a result of us prioritizing functionality. We have made conscious choices to improve insulation and warmth retention, and the pilling came as a side effect.
Damaged garment? Repair and replace parts instead of throwing it away. It is not as difficult as you might think. Here you can find simple repair tips.
Sell garments you no longer use or that no longer fit. They can continue to keep someone else warm. Through a collaboration with Tradera, Woolpower covers the listing fee for anyone selling a Woolpower garment on Tradera (use the code Woolpower<3Tradera).
If you missed the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s debate article, report, and the “Max 5” challenge, here’s a brief background: The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has recently published a debate article on overproduction in the clothing industry and overconsumption among Swedes. It introduces the “Max 5” challenge, which encourages consumers to purchase no more than five newly produced garments per year in order to meet climate targets. A simple checklist helps consumers make more thoughtful choices, highlighting quality and longevity – something that is especially close to our hearts. In a series of posts, we will share Woolpower’s perspective based on their checklist.
