Swedish-made merino wool clothing

Is the sweater you want available second-hand?

20 September 2024

Based on the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s “Max 5” challenge, we present Woolpower’s perspective on overproduction, product lifespan, and responsibility within the clothing industry.

In 2024, the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation launched the “Max 5” initiative, encouraging consumers to reduce their purchase of new clothing in order to meet climate targets. A simple checklist helps consumers make more thoughtful choices, highlighting quality and longevity.

Having a fully circular production process is one of our goals for the future. We took our first step in 2014 by using production waste to create a recycled felt material. Today, it is used for insoles, seat pads, and slippers, as well as in collaborations with companies such as ICEBUG (for example in the Eide and Groove models) and Synsam (cases for the Jämtö eyewear collection).

We still have a long way to go before we can call ourselves fully circular, but we are working with several different projects and organizations to find ways to get there.

One collaboration launched in 2023 is Woolpower <3 Tradera. As part of this initiative, we started the campaign “Pass the warmth on”, where Woolpower covers the listing fee for anyone selling a Woolpower garment on Tradera (use the code Woolpower<3Tradera).

To give the collaboration extra visibility, we chose to launch it in connection with Black Friday. For the sixth year in a row, we closed our webshop, but during 2023 we instead focused on displaying only Tradera listings featuring pre-owned Woolpower garments on our website.

If you missed the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s debate article, report, and the “Max 5” challenge, here’s a brief background: The Swedish Society for Nature Conservation has recently published a debate article on overproduction in the clothing industry and overconsumption among Swedes. It introduces the “Max 5” challenge, which encourages consumers to purchase no more than five newly produced garments per year in order to meet climate targets. A simple checklist helps consumers make more thoughtful choices, highlighting quality and longevity – something that is especially close to our hearts. In a series of posts, we will share Woolpower’s perspective based on their checklist.
